Kotuku also known as the white heron has always been rare and is admired by many for its beautiful graceful white feathers. During breeding seasons, they grow long, loose breeding plumes from its back and wings making it look even more graceful. They feed mostly on small fish, eels, frogs, shrimp, aquatic insects, mice and small birds. The Kotuku is specially adapted for wading in shallow, muddy waterways: it has long legs that are bare of feathers to well above the ankle joint and long spreading toes.
