Pukeko is the New Zealand name for the purple swamphen.  The Pukeko are not keen on flying at all, they are good waders, swimmers and excellent runners.  They mpstly prefer a vegetarian diet, but will eat eggs, frogs, small fish, chicks and mammals especially when feeding chicks.  Pukeko are seen along roadsides and low lying open country, their most favoured habitat being swamps and lagoons.
